Creator Fit Matters More Than Follower Count
As the creator economy continues to grow, new CreatorIQ research suggests brands are moving beyond follower count when selecting creators. Suitability/brand fit is now the top consideration, followed by content performance, while follower count ranks last among the factors assessed. However, there is still a disconnect: follower numbers remain one of the strongest indicators of how much creators are paid.
The research also highlights the importance of authenticity. 42% of creators report tension between what their audience wants and what brands expect, rising among larger creators. Platform dynamics are evolving too: TikTok is the preferred platform for branded content among creators overall and is viewed as strongest for content performance, while Instagram is perceived as having greater potential for building a sustainable creator business.
What this means for us:
When recommending creators to clients, selection should move beyond reach and follower count towards relevance, audience fit and cultural influence. A smaller creator who naturally fits the brand and has credibility within a specific community may deliver more meaningful engagement than a larger creator chosen primarily for scale.
It also reinforces the need to treat creator and paid media as complementary. Creators can provide authenticity and culturally relevant content, while paid amplification can provide the additional reach required to scale successful creator content beyond their organic audiences
