Key Learnings

Streams for the main broadcasters are up 24% year-on-year. RTÉ had the highest number of streams in Q1 2023, which is mainly driven by drama content including The Dry, Kin and Smother.

Streaming on a Connected TV continues to rise in Q1, with c. 45% of broadcast player streams watched on a TV screen. Netflix continues to dominate the SVOD market, with 73% of adults having access to an account in Ireland in 2023. 36% of adults have access to Disney+ or Amazon.

The Six Nations dominates the top programming, with the Grand Slam game on against England coming in at number one with over 1 million viewers. Three of the top ten programming were sport. Adult TV viewership declined by 7.7% year-on-year in Q1. For Adults 15-34, year-on-year viewership declined by 17.5%.

Facebook is still the most widely used social media platform in Ireland, but has plenty of competition with both TikTok and Twitter witnessing large growth year-on-year of 15% and 26% respectively. Like TV, live sport continued to dominate the social media conversation and is also the most popular searches on Google with The Six Nations, Cheltenham, the Manchester derby and the Superbowl dominating.

More than 3.2m people listen to radio every weekday, according to the latest JNLR/Ipsos radio listenership report covering the full year Jan- Dec 2022. 2.8m people listen to digital audio in an average week according to the latest IAB digital audio consumption report.

Public transport journeys continue to increase in January and February. Overall bus and Luas journeys are up 17% year-on-year. Traffic levels in Dublin increased by 8% year-on-year, while regional traffic levels increased by 15%.

A new Newsbrands print and digital campaign shows that 82% of adults now read a print or online news title every week. 3.25m people read a print or digital news title every week, and 78% of 16–31 year-olds read a news title/app every week.

Over 2m people visited the cinema between January and  March 2023. Avatar: The Way Of Water was the number one movie in the box office taking in €2.82 million in revenue, followed by Puss In Boots with €2.68 million in revenue.
