Liam Corbett on Creativity in Music

“In our house, you’re made to get up and sing a song.
I was always playing music growing up.”

Liam Corbett, who is part of the Core family, is one half of music act PHOENO. The collaboration between Liam and Adam Matthews started in 2019, but in this episode of Join the Dots, Liam chats with Maeve Heslin about how music has always been a part of his life.

Liam spoke about how starting the band during a pandemic was a challenge, as he believes playing live is so important to the creative experience. However, he describes going out on stage as “daunting, because everything you perform is something you have created, something personal. Imposter Syndrome is just part of the deal. In this age, you really have to self promote.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Liam talked about the need when creating something of “substance” to trust the other person and be vulnerable with each other.

“If you want to write about something which means something, you need to open up and be comfortable with each other.”
