AI Use Is Reshaping Traffic Sources in the US
The latest website traffic data in the US highlight how AI continues to reshape the digital landscape. Using Semrush Traffic Analytics data, it is highlighted that while the biggest websites remain firmly established, AI platforms and generative AI are rapidly changing online habits during information processing.
Google remains the most visited website in the US, generating 25.3 billion monthly visits, YouTube holds second with 10.3 billion visits. Both platforms recorded significant growth over the past year, with Google traffic increasing by 10.7% and YouTube by 36.6%. This shows that traditional search and video platforms continue to dominate user attention.
The largest growth is ChatGPT, with traffic rising by 48.4% year-on-year and overtaking developed platforms such as Bing and DuckDuckGo in the rankings. This rapid growth shows how quickly generative AI has become a mainstream tool for information discovery, research and daily tasks. Established platforms such as Amazon and Yahoo have experienced declines, with Amazon down by 15% year-on-year and Yahoo declined by 14%. This suggests that user behaviours are shifting as consumers’ digital habits develop.
For marketers, there is an increasing measurement challenge as more users click on AI-generated links. Platforms such as Google Analytics 4 are experiencing difficulty in accurately reporting traffic sources as a large portion of this activity is categorised as ‘direct’ traffic.
The key takeaway emphasises how traditional search remains dominant, however AI is increasingly becoming an important channel for discovery. While brands need to consider how they rank in search engines, they will also need to create strategies to how to remain visible within AI-generated responses.
