Google launch Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) details
Agenctic AI is here - Google have this week published documentation on site showing more details of their universal commerce protocol (UCP). UCP is launched to a limited numbers of advertisers within US already (Reebok, Lowe’s and Michael’s), and ecommerce brands can now finally access more details on how this works & how to prepare. UCP powers a new checkout experience for product listings in AI Mode in Search and in the Gemini app. Since launching the UCP, Google has officially shifted from a "search engine" to a "transaction engine." This week Google also introduced a selection of AI tools for retail advertisers, including branded shopping agents and ad formats optimized for AI-driven discovery.
For e-commerce advertisers, this is a significant structural change. UCP allows AI agents like Gemini and AI Mode connect directly to your product feed and checkout system and is aimed at reducing cart abandonment & streamlining the online shopping experience. Instead of a users clicking an ad, visiting your site, and manually filling out a form to purchase, AI handles the entire journey and enables users to purchase directly within their chat. AI answers product questions, applies discounts, and completes the purchase via Google Pay, all within the chat interface.
What this means for advertisers
Though UCP is solely launched within USA for now, we expect launch within Ireland within next 12 months. UCP offers three advantages:
-Zero-Friction Conversions: Irish shoppers are notoriously quick to abandon clunky mobile checkouts. UCP removes the "middleman" (the website load time, logins & payment processes), enabling users to purchase online in a single conversational flow
-Direct Offers in AI Mode: To monetize, Google have introduced a “direct offers” paid placement for advertisers to include exclusive discounts directly into AI conversations.
-Leveling the Playing Field with Structured Data: Because UCP relies on structured data signals rather than higher SEO investment, agile advertisers with high-quality product feeds can now out-maneuver larger international competitors by being more "agent-friendly."
While the UCP is a free protocol, Direct offers, bidding for placements & a transaction fee will be paid products for advertisers. Early adapters of UCP will benefit from a relatively uncluttered landscape to showcase offers and create a streamlined user ecommerce experience. We are monitoring closely for details on Irish launch date.
