OpenAI Adds Shopping Features to ChatGPT

OpenAI has introduced new shopping capabilities to ChatGPT that enables the chatbot to act as a personalised shopping assistant. Users are now able to receive tailored product recommendations across various categories such as fashion, beauty, tech, and homeware. The suggestions are powered by structured data such as product reviews, prices, and availability, sourced from third-party sites. This is done without ads or affiliate links.

What sets this apart from traditional search engines is ChatGPT’s ability to remember user preferences. For example, if a user previously liked green trainers, future queries for “trainers” may highlight similar options. This user-first, ad-free approach challenges the dominance of platforms like Google and signals a shift in how consumers may discover products online.

It is worth noting that these shopping results are not paid ads currently and OpenAI are not currently making commission on any sales. Given the rise in popularity in AI the las 12-18 months, one can assume it will only be a matter of time before this changes.

With AI, such as ChatGPT, gradually solidifying itself as an important discovery tool, how brand’s employ SEO and paid product placement will have to change shape. Instead, brands may need to focus on optimising product metadata, enriching descriptions, and creating helpful content that aligns with a user's goals. Those who adapt early stand to gain a competitive edge through embracing AI-enhanced customer journeys.
