OpenAI to release web browser in challenge to Google Chrome

Reuters reported yesterday OpenAI will release its own AI-powered web browser later this year. According to Reuters’ sources, the browser will be built on Microsoft’s Bing search engine and will feature direct ChatGPT integration to deliver summarised answers and conversational search experiences. Rather than presenting users with a list of blue links, it will allow them to ask follow-up questions and receive concise responses, streamlining how people access information online.

This development marks a further shift in OpenAI’s strategy, expanding its portfolio beyond developer tools and chatbots. The browser is part of a broader expansion push by OpenAI, which also includes recent plans in hardware development (OpenAI is working on a physical device with former Apple designer Jony Ive). These moves demonstrate OpenAI’s intent to build a more integrated ecosystem around its AI capabilities.

The announcement of the browser launch comes at a time of regulatory scrutiny for Google Chrome, with Google still facing a high-profile antitrust case focused on its control of the search market through default browser settings.

In Ireland, Chrome currently holds 66 percent of the browser market, according to Global Statcounter, and a viable alternative from OpenAI could be the first real challenge to this dominance.

What This Means for Irish Advertisers

Irish advertisers should prepare for potential shifts in user behaviour. Increased Bing traffic may affect paid search strategies, while SEO efforts should prioritise content that AI tools can easily summarise and interpret. Early adaptation will be key.
