Instagram Content Will Appear on Google

Instagram Content Will Appear on Google

Starting July 10th , Instagram will begin allowing public content from professional accounts to show up in Google search results.

That means posts including photos, videos, carousels, and Reels from business and creator profiles will now be discoverable outside the Instagram app, opening a major new discovery channel.

This change only applies to public content from professional accounts owned by users aged 18 and over.

By default, this visibility is turned on, but accounts can opt out in their privacy settings by toggling off the option to “Allow public photos and videos to appear in search engine results.”

The move aligns Instagram more closely with platforms like TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), which already allow public content to be indexed by Google.

It represents a shift in Instagram’s long-standing closed ecosystem and signals a stronger integration between social content and the open web.

Instagram’s shift marks the end of its walled garden approach. With public content now discoverable on Google, the platform has opened its (virtual) doors to the broader web. As a result, we predict competition for valuable space on Google’s search results just became even more intense for brands and creators.

What does this mean for advertisers?

This update opens new organic reach potential for brands and creators on Instagram. Posts are no longer confined to app users people searching relevant topics on Google can now discover your Instagram content, much like they would a blog post or landing page.

For advertisers, it’s a signal to start treating Instagram posts more strategically from an SEO perspective.

That means writing keyword-rich captions, using clear alt text on images, and including hashtags that reflect what people are actually searching for. This also gives advertisers the opportunity to tie Instagram content more closely into their broader search strategy.

Monitoring performance through tools like Google Search Console, alongside Instagram Insights, will help measure the impact and guide content decisions moving forward.
