OpenAI Bets on Conversational Advertising
Just a week after expanding ChatGPT Ads across Europe, OpenAI has announced a new advertising format called Sponsored Agents. The feature allows users to start a separate conversation with a brand after seeing an ad in ChatGPT, creating a more interactive experience than a traditional click-through ad.
For example, a user who sees an ad for a product can ask follow-up questions about features, sizing, compatibility or pricing before deciding whether to visit the advertiser's website. OpenAI says these conversations will be clearly labelled as sponsored and will remain separate from ChatGPT's independent responses. Advertisers will not have access to users' private conversations. The format is currently being tested with a small group of advertisers in the US.
OpenAI is also introducing new AI-powered tools for advertisers. Brands will be able to create, manage and analyse campaigns using simple language prompts within ChatGPT. The platform can also suggest ad copy and creative assets based on a brand's website and campaign objectives. In addition, new integrations with HubSpot and Shopify will help advertisers manage campaigns alongside their existing CRM and ecommerce tools.
Following last week's launch of ChatGPT Ads in Europe, this update provides a clearer picture of where the platform is heading. OpenAI is building an advertising ecosystem designed around conversations rather than traditional search behaviour.
For clients, particularly in travel, retail and other high-consideration categories, conversational ad formats could offer a new way to engage consumers while they are researching and comparing options. While Sponsored Agents remain a US-only test for now, the direction it’s heading in is clear. As AI becomes a more important discovery channel, advertisers should continue to monitor developments and identify opportunities to test and learn.
